These Common Causes Could Be Causing You Back Pain

Common Causes of Back Pain & How to Prevent Them From Your Las Vegas Chiropractor

Back Pain

Lower back pain is an extremely common condition that affects as many as 8 out of 10 adults. It's also one of the leading causes of disability and lost wages.

Understanding what's causing your back pain can be a great help for you since treatment can be customized to meet your specific needs. You can also learn how to avoid or mitigate contributing factors like weakness or postural imbalances so symptoms don't keep returning.

Here are a few of the most common causes of back pain diagnosed on examination and treated by our Las Vegas chiropractor:

  • Joint misalignments
  • Arthritis
  • Muscle spasm
  • Nerve impingement (aka "pinched nerve"); this includes sciatica and the more general term known as lumbar radiculopathy
  • Herniated or bulging disc
  • Lumbar spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal)

Sometimes back pain is idiopathic, meaning that the exact cause is unknown.

5 Ways You Can Prevent Back Pain

  1. Exercise! Your core and hip/leg muscles needs endurance, strength, stability, and flexibility to function properly. Working out your trunk muscles as well as your whole body can provide these improvements and help you avoid being too sedentary, which has been shown to be related to low back pain.
  2. Warm up properly before exercise. Back pain is often caused during sports or while lifting heavy objects at home or in the workplace. Ask our Las Vegas chiropractor for some tips!
  3. In addition to regular exercise, maintain other healthy habits including being tobacco-free and maintaining an ideal body weight. Smoking and obesity have been shown to increase a person's risk factor for low back pain.
  4. Fix your posture and body mechanics. Whether sitting, standing, lying down, walking around, or lifting objects, the quality of your posture can increase or decrease stress and strain in your low back.
  5. Listen to your body! There's a difference between pain from a tough workout and pain from an acute or chronic injury. Learn to feel what your body is telling you, and if you're noticing any concerns or issues, consult with a chiropractor as soon as possible. This can help a small issue from turning into a big one!
